Trattoria La Palomba

Trattoria La Palomba is the kind of restaurant that inspires life-long loyalty from the locals and passionate oohs and ahs from visitors. Even the most stringent food critics are known to wax rhapsodic. For instance, John Henderson of The Denver Post, who is known for his pithy - and sometimes scathing - year end round ups of all things culinary, named Trattoria La Palomba's homemade pasta with wild boar sauce as Best Italian Meal for 2007. Our family agrees. In fact, we often drive over an hour from Rome to eat at this wonderful restaurant, located in the heart of Orvieto next door to the 13th century Palazzo Comunale. For five decades, this family owned and operated restaurant has delighted diners with typical Italian warmth at the front of the house and exceptional culinary expertise back in the kitchen. Chef Giovanna uses nothing less than prime seasonal produce, meats, and locally crafted accompaniments to create the best in traditional Umbrian dishes. Starters include bruschetta with extra virgin olive oil and freshly grated truffles, our family's favorite. Oh, those truffles - so earthy and divine! Choose from several wonderful pasta courses like the tagliatelle with chicken or penne Arrabbiata. Local delicacies like pigeon, tripe, and lamb finish off the main part of the meal. Save room for desert, too. They're all made fresh on the premises and include wild berry pie, handchurned ice cream, and the Umbrian classic, tozzetti (almond cookies) with Vin Santo. Speaking of wine, the restaurant's impressive list highlights the best local, regional, and national vintages. Your servers will be delighted to discuss the merits of each particular wine in relation to your meal of choice.
