Ristorante Filippino and Ristorante E Pulera
(top two images) is located on the island of Lipari, in the heart of the Aeolian archipelago. Since 1910, the Bernardi family has been handing down the secret art of authentic Italian cuisine from father to son. The running of the kitchen was originally in the hands of Filippino Bernardi, and then passed on to his grandchildren Antonio and Lucio. Today, at the side of his grandfather Antonio Bernardi is his grandson Antonio Bernardi, but Filippino’s original values have remained the essential ingredients of their incomparable Mediterranean cuisine. The heart of their cooking is chiefly seafood consisting of only select fresh fish brought in by their boats; however meat dishes are magnificently prepared in special sauces such as a creamy mushroom or cognac. Vegetarians too will find an abundance of time-honored dishes to choose from; maccaruna i casa alla Filippino, macaroni cooked with eggplant and mozzarella and their classic peperonata is not to be missed. All their breads, pastas, desserts and ice-cream are traditionally prepared on site. Although the original small restaurant has been remodeled to include two large dining rooms, the Bernardi’s still maintain the welcoming family friendly atmosphere of former times. The interior décor incorporates the warmth of solid dark wood along with the use of period furniture. During winter months the warmth of the fireplace burning bestows a romantic yet homely ambiance. In the summer months the open-air garden is the best place to savor their unique island delicacies.

(bottom two images) – Once again, the Bernardi family has created a dining experience extraordinaire which is graciously run by Antonio Bernardi’s daughter Eugenia and her husband Angelo Paino. E Pulera sits immersed in the heart of Lipari’s center amid a magical Mediterranean garden of lemons, oranges and grapefruit trees, all exuding aromatic scents. Colorfully handcrafted ceramic tables are romantically positioned about the restaurant, along with maps of the island and interesting historical pieces of art. However, its E Pulara’s richly distinctive electrifying approach to Aeolian cuisine that had us returning on more than one occasion! The menu changes daily according to the fish brought to shore by their boats. Each dish revealed a unique Aeolian culinary sensation such as; Risotto Nero con Verdurine, Filettini di Sepia e Ricotta Fresca (black risotto with vegetable, filet of cuttlefish and fresh ricotta),Tagliolini con Zucca, Pistacchio e Gamberi (pasta with pumpkin, pistachio, and shrimp). As the grand finale E Pulera’s version of the Sicilian cannoli surely takes the cake!
